The prompt for today simply states oils. There is nothing else to give me a direction to follow. So I’m going to write about my favorite and go to oil Lavender
I use lavender oil for a myriad of things. Mostly for relaxation and stress relief, but also as a bug repellant.
Lavender Essential Oil
Properties: Lavender essential oil can be calming, sleep inducing, analgesic, disinfectant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antifungal.
Health benefits: This oil is beneficial for the treatment of issues of the nervous system, insomnia, pain relief, urine flow, respiratory disorders, skin care, hair care, blood circulation, indigestion, and immune system health.
I keep a spray bottle filled with Witch Hazel or alcohol and organic Lavender oil handy at all times. I spray it on my linens and pillows before bed to help us to relax and calm before bed. Lavender also helps to promote sleep and has proven effective in reducing the number of chemical sleep aids some people have been taking to get that full night of restful sleep. Lavender essential oil has a calming scent which makes it an excellent tonic for the nerves and anxiety issues. It can also be helpful in treating migraines, headaches (for migraines and headaches I massage a tiny drop into my temples and then lay quietly for about 30 minutes. For me, this works every time), depression, nervous tension and emotional stress. You can also add lavender oil to a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil and burn in an oil burner.
I add lavender oil to Epsom salts for a relaxing and stress relieving soak in the tub. The ratio I use is usually 1 cup Epsom salt to 10 drops lavender oil, add to bath water and soak until water begins to cool, approximately 25 minutes.
As an insect repellant, I combine approximately 20 drops of lavender oil with 6 ounces of Witch Hazel or alcohol and spray on my clothes and exposed skin before spending time outside. I don’t like commercial insect repellant, it makes me cough and sneeze, so because I like to spend time outside as much as possible, I had to find an alternative. Lavender works as well as citronella oil and I like the smell much better!
